Do You Remember Your First Competition?

Your first ever competition, no matter what activity it was in, probably made you a little nervous. You learned to deal with those nerves and to work past it. You built your resilience, your tolerance and your confidence. Win or lose, you did it, and many didn’t.

Our tournaments put students in a position where they are going to get impacted (in this case with a soft foam sword), and, they will be facing someone who is, for the moment, not their friend. They both have similar goals and that other person really wants to win.

Through the process, the student learns to be strong, to stand up for themselves, to try hard, to be gracious as they win and the lose with grace too. They learn to deal with the psychological strain of someone actually trying to hit them. This is powerful.

In real life altercations, no matter how well trained a person is, no matter how athletic they are, if they don’t have the inner power to deal with the strain and possibly impact, then they won’t be able to defend themselves. I’ve seen it hundreds of times.

This is why our tournaments are so important and we tell people, they are important parts of your martial arts training. Everyone is expected to be here.

We don’t charge a yearly competition organization fee like many schools and we don’t have exorbitant fees for the tournament. We do give a newly designed Ancient Ways T-shirt to all competitors ($30 value) and most people will win a trophy. These aren’t participation trophies, they have to earn it, but they will place according to their effort, skill, and as always, a little bit of luck.

The tournament is for ALL students and is on November 19th, 2022 here at our studio.
