Parenting Tip

Parenting Tip of the Week
This is tip 6 of a series provided by my friend and mentor, Dave Kovar. He has published several books and each one of these brief tips can drastically change the dynamic in your household. If you are interested in his books, they are available online in Kindle format or hard copy at I am honored and privileged to have such a wise mentor and friend.

Tip #6. Foster Independence - setting limits helps your child develop a sense of self-control. Encouraging independence helps them develop a sense of self-direction. To be successful in life, they are going to need both. They push for independence because it is part of human nature to want to feel in control rather than to feel controlled by someone else.

My input on this:
If I have a student making a mistake, and I correct them, then they have learned to not make that mistake again. If, however, I guide the student to discover and fix their own mistake, then they have learned to not make that mistake again, learned it with more conviction, learned how smart they are and changed their self-view a little too, affecting their sense of empowerment.
