Recently I’ve had several adult and teen students, and several parents express their overwhelming stress from the state of the world. Two people have had complete emotional breakdowns with me. Since I am a very empathetic person, I feel it too. Here is what I’ve heard people talk about, maybe you are feeling the same. It’s busy back-to-school season, the rainy weather causing flooding, horrible traffic, hurricane stress, housing and food prices climbing, can’t afford a vacation, job is cutting hours back, and getting a new job isn’t happening fast enough. Throughout history, people have faced similar or worse, but the strain still puts our subconscious into self defense mode and it affects our sleep, our physical health and our emotional state.
I want to help, but aside from the changes that need to happen in the world, there isn’t much a single student of the martial arts can do. I put my thoughts into my journal and came up with an idea that I hope will help at least someone.
How about a free, open to the public class, teens and adults only, no commitment, not obligation, we won’t even talk about money or signing up, just come in, do some of my breathing exercises, stretch a bit, then get a sweat going, then finish with some cooldown drills and finally some breathing exercises to help you sleep when you get home.
This quiets the noise for me and helps to keep everything in the right perspective, and I know it can help you too. This is open to the public, but we have limited training floor space so friends of the dojo, family members, adult and teen students…register, bring those loved ones that you know are feeling the chaos and mayhem in the world today. Let’s try to make the world better, one slow breath at a time.
The workout will meter itself to your level, don’t worry if you aren’t in great shape, do what you are comfortable with, we are here to reforge ourselves for a day, not win the Olympics.
I hope you can make it and bring someone else who you know this will help.
