For those of you who are joining me in the new Ancient Ways Monthly Adventure Club, the game rules we will be using are called Shadowdark. This is a fun and realistic flavor of Dungeons and Dragons that allows for significantly more creativity on the part of the players, a much simpler set of rules to follow and a tremendous amount of fun.
I have a free quick start guide available here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17CH4NiIoYxR_-MS8saesGlyGVo5d4ZEb/view?usp=sharing
The quick start guide is good, but I love their book and here is their store where you can get the PDF of the game book for $29, but I highly recommend getting the hardcopy for $59 and it includes the PDF if you want a digital copy too. https://www.thearcanelibrary.com/pages/shadowdark
Here is a link to a free fillable character sheet. Follow the rules in the quick start guide to create some characters, it’s very fun. No cheating. You may need more than one because surviving is always questionable for true adventurers. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mZr2LSl19vpEYZAm3CVM39HoNvgkjCQd/view
Our first game will include what we call a “session zero” where we will go over expectations and limitations to what we may encounter and do. I am always available to help build your characters and develop their backgrounds. Much of the game play will be improvisational based on what your characters say and do, and that includes their background. Most DnD players like to develop some kind of background for their characters, where they came from, who their parents were, their upbringing, their previous experiences and training. This can be a paragraph or two or even multiple pages. I don’t recommend doing it too long as level one characters don’t often survive.
On the off weeks I will be running “side quests” or downtime with each of you via email and text to further develop your character. This is the really fun part and helps it to become more of a life simulation of your character than just a “kill monsters, loot stuff” sort of game.
If you haven’t yet decided yet if you want to do this, let me know your concerns. My main group of eight people have been playing weekly (not monthly) for over 4 years, they are invited to do this too. I know everyone has school, work, family and a life that doesn’t always give us the ability to play weekly, so that’s why I wanted to make this game monthly, just for you. If you are interested in doing this, let me know. I have room for a few more. I’d like to do the first game on Saturday, January 4th at Noon, if that works for all of you. We can adjust the time according to what’s best for everyone so give me your feedback. Later in the day or evening works, Sundays also work.
Looking forward to hearing back from each of you.
